School of Foreign Languages



The predecessor of School of Foreign Languages (SFL) in Northeast Petroleum University was teaching-research section of Northeast Petroleum University, which emerged in 1960. It had a teaching staff of 10, including 8 Russian and 2 English teachers In 1978 the first in-campus enrollments of 39 students, it was renamed Department of Foreign Languages, which consisted of 3 languages (English, Russian and Japanese) In 2001 offered English major undergraduates programs In 2006 established School of Foreign Languages, comprising English Department and Department of Foreign Languages Teaching for Non-foreign language Majors In 2010 offered Russian major undergraduates program In 2013 offered Master degree of Foreign Language and Education


SFL conducted structural adjustments in 2013:Department one of Foreign Languages Teaching for Non-foreign language Majors, Department two of Foreign Languages Teaching for Non-foreign language Majors, Department of graduate English Language, Department of English Language, and Department of Russian Language. The school conducts multi-undertaking, including English major undergraduates program, English major undergraduates program, Foreign Language and Education graduates program, Foreign Languages Teaching for Non-foreign language majors on all the levels from undergraduate to doctorate program, and training tasks for continuing education students.


The school has a teaching faculty and administrative staff of 95, including a team consisting of 86 full-time faculties,7 professors, 37 associate professors, 36 lecturers. Among the teaching faculty, there are 2 PhDs and 4 PhD candidates,15 master student supervisors, 1 school-level prominent educator, 10 top ten excellent youth. Besides, it chronically employs foreign guest professors and on-campus foreign teachers to devote their expertise to classroom teaching and academic research.


The school boasts the teaching and research platform, with language laboratories, online English learning resources, and online course management platform. It is also in possession of a independent library with a collection of more than 11,000 copies of books and over 60 academic journals and 7 digitalized audio-studios (368 seats in total)


The school attaches great importance to research work and has presided 14 projects of provincial teaching reformation and 20 projects of bureau level teaching reformation,1 excellent teaching achievements of provincial and ministerial, 14 excellent teaching achievements of bureau level.154 papers , 3 monographs, and 6 textbooks are published,6 national patents are applied. As such, its students have won awards and prizes in various competitions, including Second Classroom, National English Competition for College Students, as well as challenge speech, reading, writing contests. Only in 2016, participants were over 2700, and won 108 national awards.


Now 10 postgraduates and about 80 undergraduates are enrolled. The vision of SFL is to produce professionals with global horizon. It collaborates with colleagues from universities abroad and its students have joined exchanges with a variety of institutions. Between 2014 and 2016, there are 29 students going to study in Russia. English major undergraduates earn strong records of achievement in TEM-4 and TEM-8, which have been included in a leading position of professional institutions. Programs prepare graduates of SFL to succeed in independently engaging in translation, teaching, research and management in institutes, companies, universities and relevant enterprises and public institutions.

Adhering to the idea of “One Body Two Wings”, the school will continue to take enhancing teaching quality and training high-level talents as the chief responsibilities, implement and promote the construction object of “double first-class” of our university. Following One Belt One Road Initiative, SFL have formed and perfected innovative evaluation system and teaching strategies in front of the new situation, new challenge and new opportunity, simultaneously carrying forward the Iron Man Spirit and cultivating teams of innovative and entrepreneurial talents with international perspective.
